This was a case where Alan Collins of Hugh James acted for 5 Pilipino children (now mostly adults), who were abused in the Philippines by Douglas Slade, a litigant in person, who denied liability. He had been convicted of offences at Bristol Crown Court. For a summary see the Hugh James site – All Claimants were successful and awarded damages ranging from 20,000 to £35,000. There are interesting arguments about procedure when dealing with a Litigant in Person. It is also authority for the proposition that foreign Claimants can issue proceedings in an English Court even though the offences were committed abroad.
